When scrolling on social media one can see a brand using hashtags under their posts.
What are Hashtags? Hashtags are phrases or words that follow after a # symbol with no
spacing. These are used on social media to help users find relevant content and to
tag relevant subjects to their brand.
For example a coffee shop would use the following hashtags to have social
media users find their brand.
#coffee, #latte, #eatout, #coffeelovers etc
Why is it important to use?
Hashtags are important so that users can find and interact with relevant posts and
accounts that they find interesting. They increase the reach and engagement of a post. A post that has no hashtags mean that only the current followers on that page will come across that post whereas if that post has hashtags ANY users on social media following that hashtag or searching that hashtag can see the post and like, comment or share. Hashtags don’t only help your post get engagement but they also help your post reach a wide variety of audiences that can potentially visit your page and follow you.
Hashtags are like SEO on social media, since posts rely on algorithms to
perform better the more relevant hashtags the better your account/posts
are going to do.
How many Hashtags should a brand use on each post?
Instagram:
A brand should aim to have between 25 to 30 hashtags.
However rather use less relevant hashtags then a number of irrelevant ones.
Facebook:
This is one of the platforms that don’t use a lot of hashtags. It is recommended that 1 or 2 are used on Facebook if you want to add any hashtags.
TikTok:
It is recommended to use between 4-8 hashtags on TikTok, reason being is that when watching a video on TikTok the video can easily become obstructed with the text.
However, don’t overuse or misuse hashtags!
The Instagram algorithm penalizes posts that have repetitive comments or content.
