Making the switch: Print to Digital Design
If you are a print designer and have been in that industry and now you have a new job opportunity to move over to digital design, I am here to assist with a few tips on your transition.
What is different about digital design?
You will no longer work in mm and worry about bleed; however, you still need to make sure all info on your designs are in a safe zone so that nothing cuts off. You will switch over from CMYK and use RGB color mode. The dpi used will also be less than that used for printing designs.
When it comes to tips to make the transition easier for you here are a few:
Familiarize yourself with the different social media platforms, as you will work in more than one. There are different aspect ratios for different types of posts. Example an Instagram post won’t be the same size/shape as a Facebook banner.
Download social media post templates for Illustrator to be able to jump into your designing quick and easy.
You will now work in pixels and no longer mm or cm.
Then the best advice I have to get you prepared and comfortable for the change is doing a quick online course. There are so many options available online from free to paid options that will assist you. Learning how to use your tools before you are thrown into the deep end will only make the transition that much easier.
Now that you have a few quick and easy tips to go over, you can confidently take on the new challenges you will face.
